Kolobnev king of climbers in Algarve

First seasonal satisfaction for Gazprom-RusVelo: Alexander Kolobnev obtains the ultimate success in the special list reserved to climbers at the Volta ao Algarve. Important to the achievement of this result area were the numerous attacks in the last day of competition, which saw Kolobnev protagonist with eight other riders in search of the decisive points for the ranking, on the mountains of second and third category.

«In cycling nothing comes by chance: it was a planned attack», sport director Michele Devoti explains. «We wanted to struggle and things went as we planned: Kolobnev won as many as 3 out of 4 gpm, getting the jersey that could be ended up on the shoulders of Alberto Contador and Geraint Thomas».

Kolobnev, returning to facing a stage race after racing the Vuelta a Murcia and Clasica de Almeria, commented the conquest of this important jersey: «The decision to try to win this jersey came on final stage. The race was marked by a strong wind and after the first intermediate sprint I knew I could do It fine. I knew I could draw on the points scored in the first day of competition. Team calculated what it was necessary to do in order to win. I started the attack without fear and I went well.  I am happy for myself and the whole team. This is just the beginning».

The one of Kolobnev is a very important success, considering the characteristics of the rider. «I’m not a climber and the race, from the beginning, was difficult. But from the start I felt right sensations, even if it is still early season. Day by day I realized I was able to recover forces well. It is certainly an encouraging sign for the season, that promises to be extremely difficult but very important for us. One thing is certain: there is no lack of ambition».
