Gazprom – RusVelo is to compete in Vuelta a Andalucia

On 14-18 February Russian cycling team Gazprom – RusVelo will compete in Vuelta a Andalucia.

Also known as Ruta Ciclista del Sol, the Spanish stage-race is one of the best-known cycling events in the opening part of the season. The route of 64th edition is similar to the last year’s one and features several challenging climbs. In total riders are to cover more than 710 kilometres from Mijas to Barbate in five racing days. Vuelta a Andalucia is to finish with an individual time trial on the final stage of the race.

Main hopes of Gazprom — RusVelo are on its climbers, precisely on Alexander Foliforov, Alexey Rybalkin and Sergey Lagutin. Sergey told us about his experience competing in Ruta del Sol: “In 2012, when I was competing for a Dutch squad I managed to be in top-5 in GC at Vuelta a Andalucia. That’s a good race for the beginning of the year. In 2018 there will be an impressive list of contenders, some of them started the season early with races in Australia. So, I think they will be in a good form already. However, our team roster was reinforced with young talented riders, who are desperate for seeking experience and they have quickly adapted to the squad and I would say, these guys bring me additional motivation. Speaking about myself, I have just started the season last week at Trofeo Laigueglia, unfortunately I did not show the result I wanted, but that’s just the beginning of the cycling season, so everything is still ahead. The third and fourth stages are the ones, to which I am setting up. I am ready for the mountainous tests and will do my best to show the result.”

Line-up for Vuelta a Andalucia Ruta Ciclista del Sol: Nikolay Cherkasov, Alexander Foliforov, Sergey Lagutin, Roman Maikin, Evgeny Kobernyak, Dmitry Kozonchuk, Alexey Rybalkin.
