Gazprom-RusVelo close to podium: two riders in the top 10 of the GP Lugano
At Grand Prix City of Lugano, on the swiss city’s lakeside, Andrey Solomennikov finished fourth, one step away from the podium, and Roman Maikin tenth. Very active Artem Nych, on the run from kilometer 16 up to 132.
Extreme conditions during all the race, with heavy rain and temperatures always under 6 degrees: it was a true test of endurance. At line start were 148 riders, but only 45 have had the strength to cross the finish line. At the end Andrey Solomennikov said: «Many riders had freezing principles, weather conditions have been decisive for the verdict of the race. But we fought until the end».
Andrey Solomennikov also commented crucial steps of race: «We tried to be active already in the early times and the attempt of Nych, which ended 50 kilometers before the finish, was the most significant example. We have held tough in the final stages, protecting each other. In the 200 final meters Maikin has played his cards right going close to success, but he couldn’t overtake Roberto Ferrari in the last 25 meters».
The athletic director Alexander Kuchynski talked about the decisive role of weather: «It was at the limit conditions, but we showed great personality, which is a typical characteristics of our team. We fought well, demonstrating great courage. We also worked as a team, helping each other, especially in times of greatest difficulty. We are very pleased about it. But we are also happy that no one has slipped to the ground. In that context also our excellent technical equipment was important: it has kept us dry and warmed as much as possible».
